According to here, there will be another Highlander movie (Highlander: The Source) released this year. Highlander: The Source will be directed by Brett Leonard with Adrian Paul as the legendary immortal swordsman, Duncan MacLeod.

The story will take place 15 years after Highlander: Endgame while Duncan MacLeod will join the quest searching for the origin of the immortals and the ultimte prize.

As a fans of Highlander, I’m quite confused. On one hand, I’m very excited about the new adventures of Duncan. But on the other hand, I’m also afraid that they will let me down again.

Now, if I was right Highlander: The source should be the fifth installment to the “Highlander” film series. Until now, I still thinks the first one, the original Highlander starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.

The original Highlander is the most exciting one with good story and actors, excellent soundtrack (I love Princes of the Universe, Who Wants to Live Forever) by Queen. I always remember the opening scene that Lambert hidding his sword under the jacket and his take it out to battle the enemy in the car park. I think that’s pretty cool and impressive. I like the ending too where Lambert finally has live a peaceful life with his love.

Then the worst thing happens, Highlander: The Quickening. I think it is the worst in the Highlander movie series. I don’t know where they got this stupid outerspace idea from but definitely it is the wrong move to add this element to the story of Highlander. The whole movie sucks. If I was Lambert or Connery, I probably won’t take part in it but of course I know they’ve their reasons. I know that they’ve released a few different director’s cut or special edition about this sequel but I think doesn’t help much at all.

Followed by the failed sequel is the Highlander III: The Final Dimension or Highlander III: The Sorcerer.

I remember watching this on the video CD. Although it is better than the quickening, I mean, at least no more alien concept and stuff in it, it is not very good at all. They removed the outerspace and add in the Japanese illusion stuffs. Actually, I think it is more like the art of the Ninja rather than illusions. On the other hand, I’m not very sure whether the story happens before the original or after it. It make sense if it is happened before the original because Lambert was supposed to gain the final prize in the original, right? However, I think they’ve use some lame excuses and try to convince the story has continued after the original.

Anyway, that doesn’t matter as it is not a good movie.

Finally, the Highlander: Engame kicks in. The think the idea and purpose behind this movie is to end the movie series and bring it to the tv series. This is the first time Adrian Paul’s character Duncan MacLeod was introduced. Adrian also becomes the successor of the story and the leading role in the tv series. I think no matter how hard they try, the timeline, the story itself is still inconsistent.

This movie has two contribution. The first one is it helps to path the way for the tv series. The other one is our hero, Connor MacLeod finally has his chance to rest in peace.

I personally thinks that Highlander really shouldn’t have any sequels as it will create contradictions. To me the original is always the best. Anyway, let’s see how it goes with Highlander: The Source.
